The Pilates Method

“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.”

Joseph Pilates

Joseph was a true genius – he dedicated his life to the research of body conditioning which he put his name to.  He had a complete understanding of the very basis of human movement.

Born in Germany in 1880, he was a frail child and focused on improving his own strength and fitness.

During the war, whilst working as a nurse, he initially started attaching springs to hospital beds and designing techniques on the mat or on equipment: he described it as “The Art of Contrology” which encompasses six principles:

  1. Centering
  2. Concentration
  3. Control
  4. Precision
  5. Breath
  6. Flow

After the war, he moved to New York where he opened his studio with his wife Clara.

There he developed several pieces of equipment and worked with many boxers and acrobats, dancers from the New York City Ballet, developing what would eventually became known as “The Pilates Method”.
